Brighton based Chris Cousins has become the latest Grosvenor Casinos’ GUKPT main event champion. Chris bested a field of 180 players in his hometown to secure his best ever poker payday of £20,300, the main event trophy and the bragging rights of the town.
A true poker enthusiast, Chris has a host of poker results from in and around Brighton but this great achievement now sits atop his resume as proudly as the trophy does on top of his mantelpiece. After 3 days of fierce competition many people would look forward to a break away from the tables to enjoy the success but not Chris “I’ve already registered for the next side event ” he said after being presented with his trophy “I’d better go see if I’ve got any chips left!”
The generous £100,000 guarantee saw £10,000 added to the prizepool by Grosevenor Casinos, meaning great value for the 180 main event players. The final day’s play was quick paced and lasted only 8 hours, in stark contrast to the marathon finish at the preceding leg in Edinburgh. 14 players started the day with 1 previous winner amongst them in the shape of 2013 Vic champion Martin Bader. The final table was formed fairly quickly but not before a key hand played out when the pocket kings of overnight cheap leader Fraser Bellamy ran into Chris Cousins’ flopped straight. The last remaining lady of the tournament was the first casualty of the final table as a short stacked Ellie Biessek found AK but couldn’t hold against the T9 of Chris Barnes that made a straight. Ellie’s good friend Lee Taylor had also made the final table, but his two pair would lose out to the nut flush draw of Chris Cousins who would send Lee home in 8th place
It was an action packed final table with the exits coming think and fast. By 6pm on this final day there was quite a queue forming at the cash desk with Francois Goulet (7th) and Joe Greenfield (6th) collecting their winnings after unsuccessful all in confrontations. In Edinburgh last month we saw a new two time champion crowned. History would not repeat itself here as Martin Bader made his exit in 5thplace, all in with AK he was called by the nut flush draw which wasted no time in sealing Martin’s fate

Ben Winsor was many people’s tip for success before play began on the final day. All was going well for the young player until his 74 connected well with the A74 all heart flop. Unfortunately for Ben it wasn’t quite as good as the flopped nut flush for Chris Barnes, whose hand held to take us down to 3.
All three of the remaining finalists were local players. It would be Chris Barneswho would end up taking 3rd place, leaving Chris Cousins and Hui Jin headsup. It took 20 minutes before our champion was crowned when both players flopped a flush but it was the nuts for Chris that provided a suitable end to the day
