'Julie Bishop, do you know what a Thermomix is? Two grand for an appliance is a lot of money,' Stefanovic asked.

The Thermomix kicked off some similarly entertaining scenes in the Senate on Tuesday, after Sir Peter Cosgrove's office requested the foodie dream appliance, which can chop, blend, mix, knead, heat, steam along with a number of other functions.

It seems Cosgrove has been watching too many cooking shows of late. The A$100,000 tender for cooking appliances put to the Senate's Finance and Public Administration Committee also included stick blenders, food processors, a Kitchenaid mixer, a freezer, deep fryer and pasta maker.

A question by Queensland Labor senator Joe Ludwig drew gasps from Masterchef obsessives everywhere. 'What’s a Thermomix, anyway?' he asked.

'They are very popular among the home masterchefs of today,' Senate committee chairman Cory Bernardi quipped back, appalled at Ludwig's ignorance.

Ah, Ludwig thought aloud, the device of 'elite foodies,' before again being shut down by Bernardi. “In Queensland you may refer to them as that. I just refer to them as those who have a particular interest in cooking,” he said.

Ouch. A Julie Bishop emoji face would have come in handy there.
